X Server DISPLAY

I'm attempting to get KDE running on my E-Smith testing box. I've installed just the XFree86 4.0.1 and KDE 2.0.1 rpms. I'm able to bring up WDM in X by issuing "startx" command but when I issue "startkde" I get the following errors:

xsetroot:  unable to open display ''
kdesplash: cannot connect to X server
Aborting  $DISPLAY not set

I've looked at the XFree86 and KDE references but I still can't quite manage to put it together.
I'm thinking it has something to do with the fact that Linux can have multiple consoles and E-Smith is running on tty0.

I want the E-Smith server installation to be "stock" and uneffected except for the addition of Xserver.

I tried doing a RH upgrade with just the Xserver rpms, however the RH installation routine insisted on upgrading lots of stuff that I do not want it to upgrade.

Recommendations?

Thanks.

For the benefit of anyone who run into similar issue, I was able to solve this issue.

Ignore the console/tty references in my previous message.

The key was to edit the ".xinitrc" file in /etc/X11/xinit.

At the bottom of that file I commented out the references to "tvm" and added -
startkde

Now KDE starts when I enter "startx" at the console.

Again. This pertains to running X on an E-Smith test box.
Packages:
E-Smith 4.1.rc2 - stock installation
XFree86 4.0.1 - download rpms and run the install script
KDE 2.0.1 - download rpms and install manually
you may also require a few other rpms to satisfy dependencies.

How can we get SME 6.0.1 to autostart X everytime we turn on the computer?

Best regards,

I would have to agree with Charlie, Don't.

SME was not designed to run X Windows and why would you want to?

Using SME as is with the WEB interface is perfect for a server of this type, i does not have excessive daemons running and X-windows uses an excessive amount of Processor and memory.

Again, WHY?

full agreement with dmac and Charlie Brady.

just decide if your SME should be a "server" and do its job or if it should be a "play-machine" and run X-server and so on.

cheers

Unless things have changed this was specifically forbidden in the license aggreement (at least from mitel)

if you want a x-box, presumably you want multimedia - you couldn't want x for configuration - so wouldn't you also want up to the minute hardware support - ie. fedora.

forbidden? pshaw...

Come come now... "not recommended" but no one can "forbid" it. Not support it, sure... don't need the inflammatories :)
