Topic: Backing up E-mails

Hey there.

Just wandering has anyone come up with a comprehensive way of backing up peoples emails on E-Smith?

If there is a way to export all incoming emails into a mysql database with tables for each user or something? Then its possible to backup that database whilst allowing them to view the emails??

Or has anyone come up with an ingenious way of using the webmail interface and then backing up the email for each account??

The users currently access their email via POP3. I would like to keep it that way instead of switching to IMAP (only a small server).

Basically the only system I have been able to come up with is that all incoming emails are redirected to another account for each user? say for nuser there would be an account for nbackup which the user access via the web-interface?

Anyone got any better ideas?

You could use the backup features built into SME Server.

What e-mail client are you using ?

If you are using MS-Outlook-whatever, consider changing to some other e-mail program.

Personally, I use Calypso. Although the original authors have given up further development of the product, I still find it a great e-mail client. Calypso stores your individual mail settings in a single file (called a mailbox). Like any other client, you can check multiple mail accounts, etc within one mailbox. In my case, I keep my mailbox in an I-Bay on the SME server. I can access the mailbox from any workstation that has Calypso installed and also has access to the I-Bay.

The standard SME backup does the rest.
