Topic: Installing with only 500 MB diskspace possible?

Hi,
i was trying to install e-smith 4.1 rc4 on a old box i was using as my "router" using win98 with ICS. However this box has only a ~500 meg harddisk. Is there a possibility for installing e-smith on that box, as i'm possibly not going to use i-bays, the proxy part etc. Maybe it is possible to select some packages that arent going to be installed or something like that? The box is going to serve only very few users (3-5).
Of course i could just buy some larger hdd, but i'm generally lazy and i thought 500 megs would still be enough for a small router for my private home network, even when using linux...

I have been using e-smith 4.0 for a few months, now.  I use it as an internet gateway, only, and have an unlimited 56k dialup account.  I have had as many as five users, on a Win 98 network.  The e-smith box is a pentium 133 with 16Mb RAM and a 500Mb hard drive, and is connected to the internet 24/7.  
This system is as solid as steel.
I don't know about 4.1, though.

Yep, i knew it should be possible with my system specs, but the installer stops and complains about not having enough disk space (i think it said, that it needed only 79 megs more or something like that) and then it says something about "cant find the new partition entrys" and that i should reboot and after rebooting it says "No operating system found", but i expected that after an unfinished installation.

Yep, it sure does. It includes quite a bit more software.

I think so, but my questions is, if some packages, f.ex. Squid could be left out in the installation to save diskspace?

Why not just use 3.X I have clients using it and it is solid. runs on very little memory and drive space. From what you describe you don't need all the bells and whistles of 4.1

That's interesting - I don't believe we have any registered 3.1 servers...

3.1 has some bugs which were fixed in 4.0, and similarly various things in
4.0 are improved in 4.1

That may well be true, but there are also significant enhancements to the
gateway (e.g. email, http) features which are well worth having. The modular
firewalling code in 4.1 is also an important enhancement.

A 2Gb disk is tiny these days, and can be found for very little money indeed.
We do not want to complicate the install process at this time by providing
options at install time. The simple "no questions" install is one of the things
people like most about e-smith.

If you just need "Basic router-firewall" there are over, simpler solutions, floppy based. You will not need hard drive at all.
The strengh of  e-smith server-gateway is that you have all the features (or most of them at last) in the single package in addition to basic firewall.

if all you need is a router... I will add my two cents.
use www.freesco.org it is a small floppy router that does tons of stuff is very easy to set up and is based on slackware 3.9. It also has options to move to hard drive and several addons that make it rather customizable. I used it before I got addicted to e-smith. LOL

How about smoothwall? It's very modular, it's more powerfull than a FD distro, it lets you choose how you connect (ethernet, SDL, 56K, ISDN, ...), it's very secure, and it has some fancy features. You can find it at www.smoothwall.org

  BTW, the ISO image it's just 21MB so I beleive you can live with a 500 MB HD Of course forget about many services e-smith provides.
