unactivated configuration changes?
« on: February 13, 2001, 08:25:15 PM »
Every time I configure e-emith (4.1b3) with a text-mode browser I get "unactivated configuration changes" message when trying to exit the control console. Yet there is no "activate" button/link anywhere, and I'm perfectly sure that I did use the Save link in the text-mode browser. Reboot does not help.

I'm pretty sure the configuration changes are not saved, because even though I enabled ftp access from, say, public (or private) network, it is still refused by the server from anywhere, including the local network.

When I add my home machine to the local network to allow remote administration, I can get access to the e-smith-admin, but
there is no menu on the left-hand side, because, for whatever
reason, e-smith-server resolves the names to the local network address, not to its external address, as one would expect.

The whole thing is a complete mess, and I'm not sure if anything
can be done without reinstalling it completely, in which case
I might as well go for the real RH7, since my decision to use
e-smith for this network (I'm volunteering for my son's school) was
based entirely on the (unfulfilled) promised of saving time... Since
it's a volunteer work, there is no budget for commercial support
from e-smith.com. I was tempted by the features of e-smith like i-bays, webmail, atalk and samba working right out of the box, but if I can't even configure ftp access permissions, the whole thing is useless.

Sorry for the rant, I still hope I can get some useful advice here.

You were evaluating a (now very old) developer preview, and the
announcements for each developer preview stated that things may
indeed be broken. There have been six more developer previews since
the release you tested. Please see www.e-smith.org for the various
announcements.

e-smith 4.1 has now been released. We would appreciate it if you
evaluated the final release. If you do find issues, please raise them
on the developer mailing list, or to bugs@e-smith.com

We look forward to having you as a registered, supported customer.
