If you haven't already done so get the IP address of your ISP's pop server and put that into the 'Secondary Mail Server' box in the e-mail retrieval part of the manager instead of the name of the server. If you're using a dial-up modem you will find that DNS doesn't become available for a short time after you go on line and authenticate. During that period the mail server shouts for mail and times out with an 'unable to find canonical DNS name pop.bloggsserver.com, or whatever you pop server is called. Giving the mailserver an explicit IP address solves the problem evey time.
You can check whether this is the cause of your problem by going online manually before a timed mail-call event is due so that DNS is up and going when the mail server shouts for mail.
