OpenACS - One WebCMS for all hosted domains
« on: March 09, 2002, 02:27:21 PM »
Hi, all.
I am looking for a single Web Content Management system that I can use for all my hosted domains (on a single e--smith server) Right now I am looking at "Open ACS" (http://openacs.org/) and "OpenACS Apache RPMs" (http://openacs.org/sdm/one-package.tcl?package_id=8) Do any of you have experience with this product?

Hi,

I think OpenACS requires many alterations to the defualt e-smith installation. I don't know for sure, but i took a look at it in the past (if it was easy I would have implemented it.. :-)  )

Did you take a look at PosNuke ?

http://www.postnuke.com (GPL)

Have you looked at the "new" install files for Apache? (http://openacs.org/sdm/one-package.tcl?package_id=8)
or maybe it's possible with 2 "side by side" installations of Apache or AOL Server?

And yes I have looked at postnuke and some of it's siblings, but I do not want a typical "community website" with reviews and user login/members. I want an easy way to make functional website for typical business clients:

Publishing with templates
Approval routes
Different access rights on different levels/pages (for the publisher/approver)
Easy to extend
Possible to use for several websites on a single server

Any ideas?

Have a nice Sunday

Yes (they are from Norway like my self..  :-) Definitely my favourite runner up. Have you tried to install it on e-smith? I tried it on my hosted account (easyspace.com) some time ago, but ran in to some problems and lost my motivation.. (BTW: Nice work on the fail over how-to)

Thomas,

Thanks for reading the HA How-To!  :-) (Please give it a try, it''s more easy then you think..)

To be honest I didn't try to install EZpublish. But, since I have the same requests, I will give it a try withing the next few days.

I'll keep you informed of  any result I have (and this thread)

Norway? Isn't that the beautifull country with all the fjords and fishing oppurtunties?

Yes it's that beautiful country.... but Pippi is from Sweden our closest neighbour. I guess you heard about her "mother”, Astrid Lindgren. She got buried on Saturday with a great parade in Stockholm. (the capital of Sweden, the Norwegian capital is Oslo.)
Good luck with EZP.

Hi,

JFYI

---> From Redhat:

As you may have heard, Red Hat recently purchased assets and technologies from ArsDigita, and hired a number of ArsDigita personnel.  As a user of these technologies, you may have some questions about the transaction and what it may mean to you.

Most importantly, we at Red Hat, including our new colleagues from ArsDigita, are committed to the continued success of the ArsDigita Community System (ACS) and its users.  As a member of the Red Hat executive team, I own the commitment personally and on behalf of our company.

The former ArsDigita folks who joined Red Hat comprise a team with which I will work closely to ensure that existing customers realize the business and technology benefits of ACS and related technologies, such as the ArsDigita Content Management System (CMS).  Our commitment also extends to assuring that the global strength of Red Hat as an open source solutions provider accelerates the development and adoption of ACS, CMS and new technologies.

Additional information about the transaction and our future can be found

Thomas/RequestedDeletion...

Thanks for your questions/input on CMS systems.  I'm also looking for a 'content management' system to run on my SME server, and (like Thomas) allow for more of a "business" type intranet/Internet site to be easily built and administered - while getting all of the "content" from a back-end database.

It would also be nice if it could handle multiple domains (virtual domains?) on the same SME server, and allow for certain users to have access/permissions to make changes to certain areas of each site/domain only.

Are there instructions for installing either OpenACS or eZpublish on an SME server?  Does anyone else have "2 cents" to add to this thread?  What other CMS apps should I be looking at?  All thoughts and ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

Regards,
Patrick

You should looch at phpWebsite at http://phpwebsite.appstate.edu/ .
I am running 10 virtual sites on a SME and it works like a charm.

Iterested in using phpWebSite, but have one question, how do you configure it for virtual domains? If you could provide a quick installation guid, it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.
