Web Hosting/Mail Server

Greetings!

If I can make my SME v 5.1.2 act successfully as a full-featured webserver/mailserver I will be ecstatic.

Problem:

I have around 30 websites that I have hosted at Interland - all but one are virtual hosts - no ssl in other words.
I'm setting up a dedicated server for hosting these domains and the server needs to be able to relay mail from my clients' machines (at least nationwide).  If I had everyone setup using nothing but webmail I wouldn't have a problem.

I have been testing this on my server/gateway at home and it doesn't work - my friends helping me test it get the relaying not allowed message in their email client while attempting to reply to the message I have sent.

I'm wondering if I have the server setup as server only if I might have better luck.

Anyone who can advise as to the wisdom or lack thereof in using SME Server as an internet hosting server will be highly praised in my own mind!  And it would certainly help if one could indicate with a definitive Yea or Nay on the email relay issue - if Yea, a solution; if Nay, I guess I'll use RedHat or Mandrake.

Thanks in advance!

Bobby

A couple of things to consider when making the decision to host your sites yourself:

1)  The way e-Smith is designed you will not have user1@domain1.com be different than user1@domain2.com (Each mail account will have a unique username).

2)  You can make the mail relay from the outside world with some tweaking.

3) You are using RedHat already with e-Smith, just a well customised version.

I have set up e-Smith for multilple domains, and have no problems.  I use a another customised RedHat v7.1 for my hosting, both work well in their respective environments.

I think that you will have a problem with user@domain issues that Bobby pointed out. This will be pretty hard to get around. I've gotten around this problem by disabling the e-smith mail functionality and using Communigate Pro software.
However it's about $300 for the 50 user version. I've been using it for years and it's rock solid and all the admin is via a web interface.
You'd be able to install Communigate as an rpm and still use e-smith as your web server. I know $300 or even $1000 sounds a lot but it was more than worth it when I found myself never having to touch another sendmail.conf and fetchmail.conf ever again.
I still use e-smith for all my single and multi-domain clients' email but only when I have the client id's spanning the different domains.

Good luck,
Julian
