Closing streaming radio port
« on: April 11, 2002, 08:57:28 PM »
Hi,

Anyone knows what is the rule I could use to block shoutcast/streaming radio ports, I don't want the users on my network to use these services on the internet because it kills my VPN performances ...

Thanks

The ones that use their own ports (eg. Quicktime) for it are pretty easy to kill, as all you need to do is close down the particular ports in question.
RealPlayer and Windows Media Player are a little tougher as they can stream over port 80 and thus require some filetype extension blocking (eg. *.rm, *.ram,*.wmv and so forth).
The only catch to this approach is that there's no way to tell radio streaming from normal video clips, thus if you kill one type of multimedia, you're likely to kill them all.

As a further thought, maybe a better solution is to block the offending radio station sites instead.

Side note: I'm not sure if this is of any note but I've found "people" solutions tend to work better then "tech: solutions for content issues. eg. A few companies post lists of users who've download stuff from unwanted sites (porn etc.) for the previous week. Public shame may not be applicable in your case but the general idea of "non-tech" solutions might be worth exploring.

Thanks but I don't care about blocking streaming videos and it really is not a problem for my concern in doing this since I need the best bandwith for VPN IPSEC and PPTP connections so I really don't want to be bothered by useless stuff .. remember, this is for job, not for fun ...

Anyway, the problem is that I don't know the ports I have to block for Shoutcast for example ...

And does anybody know where I can find a list of all the well known port I should block such as Quake port or things like that ...

Thanks

I hate to tell you this but ShoutCast can run on any port.  It's up to the installer of the streaming server to pick a port to run it on.  I've run mine anywhere from 2000 to 8000 (8000's being the most common).  I think you'll have a hard time blocking Winamp/Shoutcast users, I think user education is going to have to be your course of action.

Ok but is there a way for me to see which ports are or have been used so that I can see which ones I have to close ?
