Slow in connecting..

Hi,

I have just recently installed the SME server V5.2.1 (update 1) and everything went
great, (Thanks!).

The server is operating in Server Only mode.

From my local network, the connection to pickup mail is fast, but from the Internet it is v v v slow, it can take up to 30 secs to pass username/password.

The network setup is thus:-

Internet
   |
   |
Alcatel Speedtouch 570i ADSL Router
   |
HUB
   |
   |
SME

I am using Port Address translation as port 143 is blocked by our corporate firewall (IMAP comes in on port 10101 and is translated to port 143 by the Speedtouch)

Anyone know why this would be so slow from external, yet fast local?

Machine is a PII 300Mhz, with 256mb RAM

My guess would be due to the name lookup that most of "connection" services do.
For the local network, the lookup only needs to go as far as the hosts file or the internal DNS server.
For the external stuff, a DNS request needs to be made to the outside world.

An examination of the system logs could highlight something.
