hi,

I am going to replace the old NT-server at our school with e-smith as a print/fileserver and see no problems so far. the only difficult thing will be to replace the Epson Stylus RIP server software on this NT-server with ghostscript, letting our one and only G4-mac print to a acient Epson Stylus Pro 1520.
I recently installed PDF-LAN-print at home, on my own e-smith-server and I think letting the mac print to the epson via gs isn't that far away from this. I am pretty sure that I have to create my own papd.conf under custom-template and start a script somewhere to put the ps-printfile through gs.

I know that this isn't officially supported by e-smith, but maybe somebody can give me some hints!

It seems hard to me.
I looked at papd.conf and found
OkiPage 10ex:\
        :pr=|/usr/bin/lpr -Poki:

so it seems that atalk uses lpr.
To print pdf, we use samba to create a network printer.

what I forgot to mention:

epson 1520 is a non-postscript printer so, using the gs is the only option to let the mac print via the e-smith server. I can print easily print postscript-files from the e-smith-shell using the standard gs commands and the epson-filter/driver.

I had the same problem and solved it by using apsfilter (a 'magic' printfilter that sits in front of the lpd queue and sends postscript print jobs through ghostscript, among other things). I've packaged apsfilter into an RPM and am working on a mimi-HOWTO. If you can't wait, contact me and I'll send you the RPM (nothing fancy: just unpacks, configures and make installs the source) or get the source from www.apsfilter.org (you need make to 'make install' it). You'll also need to install a2ps and (optionally, I think) psutils.

P.S. Filippo, if you're reading this, can you enlarge on your solution?
