Samba & file locking

Hi all. I have a 5.0.4 server and seem to have some locking problems - see my post on Clarion & Topspeed.

Can someone one explain in a bit more depth the following :

locking - I understand that this is on and why

Strict locking - don't understand why 'locking' doesn't have say 'off/on/strict' as one option.

What's the relationship between plain locking and strict locking ? I have read smb.conf man pages et al but it isn't that clear. How much difference does strict locking have ?

What version of Samba does 5.0 have - is it upgraded in 5.1.2 and should I upgrade Samba regardless ?

Any help gratefully received.

Another twist to the tale.

Got access to the files that I needed, but can someone explain the following from smb.conf :

# The Linux kernel does not currently synchronise oplock requests
 oplocks = no

If I change it to yes then all is hunky dory. But why the above statement ?

Any guidance fully appreciated.
