Access to a PC behind the E-smith server
« on: June 06, 2002, 11:40:36 AM »
Hi,
I need to get in contact with a computer’s hard disk behind my E-smith server.
Is that possible?
I can get in contact with the PC with VNC, but I have a program there need full access to the disk and the files on it.

The safest way to do this is to SSH into the SME & then use smbclient to access the PC's share.

Hi Nick
It sound good, but how do I do this?

Some more info about my problem, it is a pc located in a other city I want to give access to our economic system that is located on the pc behind the E-smith server. The pc in the other city is connected to the internet via ADSL.

why don't you pptp in to the server and have full access to your network as if you were on a machine there .
asuming your other machine is a windows machine

just change in the e-smith access settings number of pptp clients to 1
then on the machine you are using at the other end make sure you have high encription installed then in network connections or dialup connections select new connection then connect to a vpn type in your webaddress that should be it .
so when your on the internet if you open this connection it will ask for a login and thats it you are vpn'd across a vast distance .

Hope this helps or is it in the wrong direction

Hi,
I’ am not sure that I understand :-)
I have pptp set to 1, and I have no problem using VPN to the E-smith server’s i-bays form a remote Pc. But I can’t get to the pc’s behind the E-smith server and there are the data I need.

If the pc is configured to share it hard drive (microsoft client, and file and print sharing), and if you know the IP address (192.168....) you can access the resources using pptp!! is like you were in the local LAN!! I had copy files from work to home with no problems!! it works!!

Make sure your network IP address ranges are different on the 2 networks. For instance
Your internal network IPs are in the 192.168.1.x range
Their internal network IPs are in the 192.168.2.x range

If they are the same you won't be able to see the machines on the other network even though you can connect to the VPN E-Smith server.

Hi,
Thanks for your help, it is working now.
I had a could se the server on the network, but not my pc’s, when I connected with VPN. But now all my pc’s on the network are listed and I can access them.

What about security on the VPN connection?

128bit encription

thats why you have to have the high encription installed on your win pc
