Which is a better CPU for SME - Pentium Pro 200 or Pentium 200MMX? I've got to choose which one to install on...

Both are pretty old, but the PPro should be a more powerful processor.

The Pro is the way to go.

MMX is a feature of questionable value for an e-smith server, as it's tailored to improve MultiMedia stuff.

Also, the Pro uses a very very similar "core" to the Pentium2 - people were a bit confused by that when it came out so soon after the pentium pro...

Morten:

Lots of variables. Do you mean you have a choice between a socket 7 or 8 motherboard OR you only have a Pentium 200 system and a Pentium Pro 200 system to choose from? If so, what are the details of the systems, what do you plan to use the system for (static web pages, dynamic php, java, samba, how many users, what type of connection do you have to the internet? you get the idea :)

Off hand, I would say Pentium pro. As stated above the Ppro is more like PII, even better though, it has full speed on die cache and I don't know that mmx has any usefulness with Linux as a server. I purchased a dual 200 mhz Ppros Mobo about 5 years ago...and just installed SME on the same system..works great...from what I have researched it can easily saturate my bandwidth....probably saturate up to a T1...can anyone back this up? However, many socket 7 motherboards can drop in a k6-II of higher frequency the p pro is really a dead end solution...soooo :)

Here is some info on the pro that might help you...a google search on Pentium pro will also give you lots of links

Maybe you're thinking of replacing your "aging" Pentium-based server with a Pentium Pro-based one. Or perhaps you're considering an entirely new server purchase. Either way, you're probably wondering what makes the Pentium Pro different. Similar to the Pentium, the Pro utilizes a 64-bit bus, has a floating-point unit on the chip and has 8 KB of Level 1 (L1) cache.
The Pro also incorporates a four-way Level 2 (L2) cache and performs predictive and dynamic instruction execution. These features enable a Pentium Pro to perform twice as fast as a Pentium at the same MHz level when working with 32-bit applications. For these advantages, you won't have to pay much more than you did for your present Pentium system.

FreeBSD currently powers high-loaded sites like Yahoo and cdrom.com. The last handles 750 GB of transfers per day and 3600 simultaneous connections on single Pentium Pro 200 PC.
