Forward IP Address at change

Hi Folks,

I'm very satisfied with E-Smith since I brought it onto my Home Server.

Now I want to add a "Feature": When ppp comes up and my Server receives an IP Address from my ISP I want to receive an Email at work with the changed IP Address of my Home Server.

I do not use dyn.dns, in case of any questions, my website is hosted on the ISP's Server, I fetch my mails from the pop- boxes there and all works beautyful. The thing is, that I can't connect from my office, I have to call my wife and pray that she doesn't shoot the box to hell ;-), btw I bother her meanwhile.

Shouldn't be a big Problem, is it?

Thanx in Advance

How would the dyndns service be bad for you?

Your website is hosted on the ISP's server, that's fine... are you using the same domain name on your e-smith box that you are using for your website hosted on your ISP's server? e.g.

SME server domain : e-smith.mydomain.com
ISP hosted domain : www.mydomain.com

If you use a "fresh" domain from dyndns.org (e.g. frank.homelinux.org) then you can surely use dyndns without issue and you won't have to worry about getting the new ip emailed to you...

or am I missing something?

See http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=14069.msg53515#msg53515 for some information the files you want to edit, but basically you would want to insert the mail command in there. I recommend just following the directions in that thread but use the below command:

ifconfig|mail -s "PPP new IP" youremail@yourdomain.com

It's pretty snazzy :)

The thing is, the Website is hosted under www.f-arndt.de, which is established since 2000. That was during ISDN + POTS time, for about half a year I run on ADSL and since then I use Linux, former SUSE and BSD, but now I changed to SME. Well, as I now from my old DNS Record Config, my Mailserver had to have a diffrent domain as the website, so I choose for my local Network "farndt.de".

I only use E-smith for proxiing, mail transcieving and routing, I don't wnat to have it turned on all the time.

But anyway, if the box pulls for what reason ever a new IP I want to have that IP mailed to my office, that's all ;-)

Does anyone have a clue how to realize this?Guck Puppy wrote:
