178 PC's on 2 e-smith's !!!
« on: March 13, 2001, 07:39:21 PM »
hello Everyone,

Sorry to post here but this is quit a leap for esmith.

A last minute decission in the event strategy has asked for 2 gateways to push over 178 (one hundred and 78) computers thru for a festival starting thursday right thru till sunday night (everyday from 8:00am till 11:00pm).

The task I'm undertaking is to put 2 esmith gateways to give DHCP licences to all w98 machines for the usual stuff of internet accessa dn mail and real av and...

The decission was fought over by a last minute deadlock with the local telecom company which put the festival at a stand still by providing only 32 fixed ip addresses without routers!!

So in a matter of 1 hour (right from fitting cards and assembling the 2 computers , and one technican only !! ... me) we have got e-smith running and doing its job

This is absolutely unthinkable on the regular winx machines !! and to think of the cost and licence hassels involved just for 4 days of a festival.

Thanks a lot and keep up the good work, hats off to the team at e-smith.

regards,
aniston.

PS: Will keep you'll informed on the progress of how it all goes in these days.

Richard

Bravo, Aniston!

I only wish I had such needs to put my e-smith server toward!
I do want to setup a rival to hotmail with my hogz.com domain.
Any suggestions?

Cheers!

Update, .... all ok so far over 60 + hours of continuous operation !! Take a look at these live cams which come from direct ip addresses...

http://217.58.177.131 thats the control centre
http://217.58.177.133 thats the main stage
http://217.58.177.132 this is one of the halls of the festival
http://217.58.180.74 this is close to the main stage but in the reverse

ofcourse there are not exactly 178 pcs 100% of the time on the 2x2Mbit lines, but regular traffic is generally around 140 PC's and the Cisco router mamagement s/w shows a usage of around 91% of the bandwidth allocated a lot of this is durning the 16 hours of the festival

Going a bit further the 2 servers are unfortunately unbalanced serving 8 zones (consider this division due to the physical routing of cables and switch//217ers) also a lot of administrative ristrictions on the way we built the network for the festival. so we get around 70 to 80 PC's on server1 and about a 100 on server2.

will keep the updates going .....

aniston

correction... thats 16 hours a day of system administration ... for all sneekears, torjans, peepers, portscanners, ICMP's and various people trying to break and bring down the server's.!! (I really don't understand what for ... it'd dammn free and they still want to make my life miserable.) There were guys trying to put up a web server from the inside with some funny relaying stuff but we got to them only 3 hours later (this is  a bit interesting but i really cannot explain how it was done, will hold all logs till the festival is over and done with, then will examine them), also people who were trying to nuke other intranet users from different pc's (things people can think of !!).

well another 2 hours to round up another day and we are expecting the worst on the week end, so fingers and toes crossed !! will put up a few snapshots of the festival and the brain stand, also the lovely servers doing their job's.

regards,
aniston.

PS: we are overworked and in serious need of some sleep so if you have any ideas on how to bypass that... please let us know.
