Hi all,

I just installed a fresh copy of e-smith 4.1.1
So in 20 minutes i had almost everything working, almost.... the pppoe link wont come up...

In previous set-ups on my W98 machine i followed the manual and that noted that i had to configure my nic with ip adress 10.0.0.150 and make a vpn connection to
"10.0.0.135 pc1" enter a username/password and the link comes up...

So i installed e-smith and chose for the pppoe option, but now i dont see anywhere an option to geive my second (external) nic this ip adress...

Is this default ? or do i need another configuration ?
The setup is as follows

workstation W98:
192.168.1.65 (DHCP)

e-smith box:
nic 1: 192.168.1.1
nic 2: ???

adsl modem (alcatel) 10.0.0.134
and as a second number 192.168.0.100
this because i expected to gice my second nic a number like 192.168.0.1

i think i am missing something here, can anybody help ?

You don't have a PPPoE link, you have a PPTP link. There is currently no support for PPTP, although a few users have put together something which works.

I think the one "http://www.grand-pa.dyndns.org/" is the one i need,

except its in french.....

the one hanscees describes, covers e-smith 4.0 with a single nic
and i want to use 2 nics....

I got the pptp link running bit i think i screwed up the firewalll.....
so back to the drawing board for me....
( or someone wants to translate the french page of grandpa?

Hi Gerard,

as I'll be posted to NL somewhen this year I started investigating about
ADSL in the Netherlands. The first thing ...it's much more expensive than
here in Germany. (   But to to your point....

Getest op: RedHat-6.0

1) Download PPTP voor Linux

2) Installeer de patch linux-pptp-1.0.2.patch met "patch < linux-pptp-1.0.2.patch".

3) make

4) zet je KPN username en password in /etc/ppp/chap-secrets, bv:

# Secrets for authentication using CHAP
# client        server  secret                  IP addresses
   *         *

5) zet het volgende in /etc/ppp/options.adsl

idle 0
debug
noauth
user
usepeerdns
defaultroute

6) verander het ipadres van de ethernet kaart waar het ADSL modem aan
verbonden is in 10.0.0.100, netmask 255.255.255.0. (Elk ipadres is in
principe goed mits je 10.0.0.138 maar kan bereiken) (bij RedHat kan dit
met /usr/sbin/netconfig)

7) test als je het ADSL modem kan bereiken met "ping 10.0.0.138".

Verbinding maken met KPN ADSL net kan nu met "./pptp 10.0.0.138 file /etc/ppp/options.adsl",

(Eventueele debug output bij het maken van de PPP verbinding)

9a) Je kan nu via http://10.128.1.6/ inloggen op het ADSL netwerk.

9b) Volautomagisch inloggen bij XS4ALL
   - Save adsl-login als /etc/ppp/adsl-login
   - Vul je gegevens in het script
   - Start het

    Met dit script wordt je volautomagisch een verbinding met XS4ALL gemaakt.

A question in response to Thor's suggestion:

Which serverconfiguration hav you used: (server, gateway or both) and what IP configuration for the nic('s) and ADSL modem.

Also I would like to know if ADSL4Linux has to be installed after a configuration change for the e-smith server. I'm afraid that the configuration templates will undo the changes made by ADSL4LINUX.

Can anyone shed a light on this matter?

First of all, I installed 2 network adapters. It can be done with only one, but with upcoming changes in April I guess I'm going to need two

The first has IP 10.0.0.1, but can be any within this range.
The second I gave IP 10.166.193.217, according to the internal IP from my ISP using VPN. DO NOT USE YOUR REAL EXTERNAL IP!!!

Set E-smith up without dial-up. Otherwise your ADSL settings will not be saved.

Download ADSL4Linux from http://www.adsl4linux.nl/ and save it to your server. Install and set up the program. This is very easy with user interface. The installation save all settings.

Type adsllogin to make connection and adsllogout to break the connection.



WHY did I gave the second network adapter the internal IP from my ISP? When you use your real external IP, e-smith cannot detect any incoming connection. Ok, that is very safe, but you cannot run it as a server

Well, it is an idea...

Half of April the login procedure will be changed. So I'm not gonna make a setup manual for for few days. When I found out how the new procedure will work, I will. Any questions on how to do it now are available on this forum (you can mail me too) and at http://www.adsl4linux.nl/

btw, You don't have any trouble installing e-smith I hope? That is the easiest part

I understand that you wait for changes.
I have no trouble with E-smith installation, if you would know what to choose.
For example:

Do I choose for Server and Gateway or only Server as explaned by others?
It is a little bit confusing this way, I'm not a Linux guru so I have to follow
what I read.

If you like all your other computers behind the server to get onto the internet I would install it as a server/gateway
