VPN Again
« on: July 15, 2002, 12:02:39 PM »
I had my SME Sever 5 setup, and configured PPTP VPN. I was successful to make VPN connection in my LAN, but no success through WAN. When i try to make VPN connection through WAN to my server, i was first get connected and disconnected immidately.

I was able to ping my server and access my web site through WAN. I am using broadband as my internet connection for the server. I had already allow port 1723 and 760 for PPTP connection.

Does anyone know what is my problem? Many thanks.

Derek

Is your client machine Win98? If so you need to upgrade to Dial-up Networking 1.4

I had the same problem and that fixed it for me.

Many thanks for your reply, Derek.

Your are right that i had used Win98, i will try your solution.

I had also used W2k Pro to make the VPN connection, but have not success.  The same problem with Win98.  Any idea, thanks.

Hai,

I don't know if yor still trying but.

I read a lot about this and everyone opens port 1723 but you also need to forward protocol 47(gre) to your vpn server!

This is for PPTP and not for IPSec connections.

If you forward tcp port 1723 and  gre port ---  to your vpn server it should work!

Good Luck

Hi there,

I’m having trouble with the VPN connection.

What is this about protocol 47.

On my Smoothwall Firewall, it’s only possible to portforward TCP and UDP.

There is nothing about any protocol?

Any suggestions ?

Use the SME server in servergateway mode, and don't use Smootwall. Or is there something that Smoothwall supplies that the SME server doesn't?

The other thing you should do is uncheck the "default gateway" box on the client when creating the VPN.

Ups,

You are quite right; off course I should stop using the Smoothwall. The reason for using it, is that it’s protecting my network until I’m finish with the testing of the SME server. Right now I’m using a RedHat 7.2 witch took me several days to get running with all my settings and services.

I still need to get some loose ends to be fixed. E.g. users hompages like www.mydomain.net/~user

It runs fine on my standard RedHat / Apache but I can understand from some of the reading in this list, that it’s not advisable to edit in any config files your self, as the SME server-manager does it for you.
