Topic: 5.5 Obtuse SMTP replacement

I see that 5.5 doesn't use Obtuse STMP anymore.   Can someone please help me out by explaining the advantages of the new SMTP server setup?  More importantly, will this allow for outside user-AUTH relaying???  And if so, is there a way to migrate to the new SMTP on 5.1.2?
