enabling lynx access to external sites

[copying this across from the 'general' forum, after reading some more it seems more suited to this forum]

Hi all,

I'm using SME5.5 and need to be able to access external sites, or more precisely one external site, using Lynx. The docs claim that Lynx access to external sites is turned off.. this is probably a good idea but in my case it's a problem.

Does anyone know how to fix Lynx's config to switch external site access back on?

Thanks all..

Daniel

Daniel,

Have you actually tried to use Lynx. I am running 5.5 and have no problems accessing external sites.

If you start lynx from the admin console to access the server-manager, access is restricted to the server-manager.
If you want to use lynx to access external sites, you'll need to change to a new console by pressing Alt-F2, log in as root with the admin password and fire up lynx by simply typing 'lynx' at the prompt. If you plan to use console programs such as lynx on a regular basis, it is generally considered a good idea to do so as a regular user and not as root.

Which docs claim that? Sounds like an error to me - lynx can acccess external sites from my box.

ahh.. you are all correct, it's only lynx from the server console that can't access external sites.

lynx at the command line isn't working for me because the DNS server (not e-smith, an external system) failed between me installing e-smith and trying to use lynx.

As they say, timing is everything.. :)

thanks everyone
