Topic: seting up DHCP on Win NT

I've spent hours mucking around with the settings on my Win NT workstation, trying to get it to access the 'net through the e-smith gateway. Ain't happenin'.

The docs address Win 95 (a little out of date?), but not Win NT which isn't the same. Is there a set procedure to follow to get this to work?

I have a set of dedicated IP addresses coming in to a small hub. The e-smith machine has a dedicated IP from one of those. The second network card on the e-smith is hooked to another small hub to which I have the Win NT box.  Is this too screwy to work?

Previously I had the NT system going through a router. That combo wouldn't allow DHCP so I gave the NT box it's own IP from the range assigned by the router. That worked after much restarting and tweaking of settings - basically going in circles until something worked. I have no desire to go through that crap again.

I'm just spinning at this point. Can anyone suggest a standard approach to getting this to work? This is driving me nuts!

So from there all you do is enable DHCP on the e-smith server via the control console, reboot if necessary.  On the NT box, remove any IP configuration entries, select use DHCP and reboot the workstation.  Assuming you are using e-smith 4.1.1 and accepted the defaults when you enabled DHCP, your NT box will be assigned IP = 192.168.1.65, SN = 255.255.255.0, GW=192.168.1.1, DNS=192.168.1.1.  At the NT box, open the command prompt and use 'ipconfig /all' to verify.

Does 'remove any IP configuration entries'  include the DNS settings or will these be cleared automatically when e-smith takes over?

I don't seem to have a problem getting it working with an assigned IP. It's just not what I'd prefer.

Maybe I should have stated 'remove all'  If you leave DNS settings they will not be cleared automatically when e-smith takes over.  You want DHCP to be able to assign the e-smith server as the DNS server so 'remove all' IP configuration entries.
