VPN woes
« on: July 23, 2002, 11:53:09 PM »
hello again all

i have six clients (each with its own internet static ip adress) VPN'ing into our sme box, for some reason when one of the clients disconnects and reconnects at a later time dns still has it registered using its old leased ip adress. the thing thats happening at the mo is one client disconnects then another will connect and recieve the ip adress the previous client had. so if i ping 'host1' thats actually disconnected i get a reply but the reply is from a different machine, which after investigation is 'host2'

so i suppose what im asking is is there any way to speed up DNS renewals with esmith, or can i specify VPN clients to use a certain IP adress rather than relying on SME to DHCP the address's to them??

many thanks again
Macca

There is no DNS renewal, so you can't speed it up - only static host to IP address mapping is supported. IP addresses are not allocated to VPN clients by DHCP, but by IPCP (within PPP), but they are allocated within the same pool of addresses, so it's quite similar to DHCP.
