Switching to RAID on a running server

Hi!

Is it possible to add a second HD on a running system (not hot plug, but a system with an installation of SME 5.1.2) and build a RAID without reinstall of e-smith?

are there any howtos for this?

Dear Pat

I believe you need to do a new instal and select the RAID option. You cannot upgrade an existing 1 disk instal to a 2 disk RAID1.

You can do a backup to desktop (another PC on the network) before the RAID instal and after the instal is complete, then restore your backup.
If you have a lot of data on the server your backup file size may be too big (ie bigger than Win/DOS systems file size of 2Gb or Win2K file size of 4Gb).
Alternative is to backup to tape (which will get everything) and then restore from tape
OR
you could copy (& delete) all the ibay data off onto another PC on the network, then run the sme backup to desktop (which should only be a small file size of typically 1 -12Mb), then restore (which will restore all your server configuration etc) and then copy al the data back into the ibays.

Your dual HD RAID1 should then be the same as it was before the re-instal except that you will have to re-instal any rpm's you loaded after the original instal.
