Setting SME as an email relay server
« on: July 26, 2002, 03:30:02 AM »
Hi,

I reade the post of Robert Birch "SME, Exchange & Relaying" but i think my questions are different. Be patient cause i'm a new sme user. Following the details of my project :

I am going to put my SME 5.5 box in front of an MS Exchange mail server. I have the directions to set the sme server like this :
* email coming from the Internet are forwarded tho the exchange box (and temporary stored on the sme server if any problem on the Exchange Server).
* email coming from the customer are send via outlook to the exchange server that send them to the sme server. The sme svr forward them to my ISP (and temporary stored them if any problem with my ISP link).
The two mail server will be in the same domain, and in the same IP network. I've got a hundred mail box.

Does an SME server is able to do this ? Is there any special setting to do ?
Do we call this functionality "mail relaying" ?
My last question concern maintainability. Will i have to set all my users on the sme box or could i just say "manage all the domain". I'm afraid in creating each user on the exchange box first, then on the sme. Is there any possibility in just creating users on the exchange box then saying to the sme svr, relay every mail.

Thanks,
benja

On SME you must as a minimum set these two entries:

E-mail retrieval, Delegate mail server:
Other e-mail settings, Forwarding address for administrative notices:

Nope, you are simply creating a Delegate mail server.

Nope.

Also, don't forget to put a good antivirus program in place.  RAV works well in protecting an Exchange Server behind an SME server.

Lastly if you are interested in running and using OWA behind the SME server, this requires many changes.  A separate topic for discussion all together :-)
