WinXP Pro - domain login problem
« on: July 27, 2002, 05:03:16 AM »
I setup e-smith as a domain controller with roaming profiles enabled.  I then tried to login with a Windows XP professional client with the user account "jsmith" which I created on the e-smith server.  I get the error "access denied" or [user/pass not found].  For troubleshooting I disabled roaming profiles, but still receive the same error.  I then tried logging in under "admin" and it works.  I removed the computer from the domain and tried to rejoin and experienced the same problem - only the admin account seems to work.

Any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I had a similar problem with Win2k/Pro. I found the answer in a How-To somewhere, but as far as I recall it had to do with the local security settings on the Win Box. Unfortunately my Win2k is in Danish with translated settings, but look for something that tells the pc to use encrypted communications with the server and disable that or those settings.

When I installed a Win2k/Pro box from scratch I didn't have that problem as the pc was "born" as a member of the domain and automatically disabled the setting.

If this doesn't work, try creating the exact same account on the XP box. It worked for me before I read the real solution.

Cheers,
Jens

You're right and I do remember reading about that in the past.  I had forgotten.  I almost looked at the local security settings when I remembered that the "admin" login does work so that shouldn't be the problem, however, I will look at the security settings.

Thanks

After I checked it I noticed when entering the wrong password I get "unknown username or bad password" but when I enter the correct password it get "Access denied" so it looks like a permissions issue somewhere.  Once again, the "admin" account works successfully.

How do you have Samba set to authenticate?  I know by default only the admin and root accounts have permission to log in locally to the SME box, I wonder if those permissions are being transfered to Samba.  Have you gone through:

The XP security model is the same as 2000 (for the most part).

Dear All

I had just a need for this WinXP domain logon fix this weekend. It worked perfectly.
I have a sme 5.1.2 server acting as Domain controller and a (new) WinXP Pro server which could not log on to the sme domain and so I had user names and passwords entered directly into it.
There are Win95B & Win98SE workstations on the network and after setting up the new WinXp server only the Win95 workstations could log on and get access to the WinXP files. The Win98SE workstatioins could not access the WinXP server at all, although they could see the shared folders etc.

After applying the WinXP fix (and logging it on to the domain) all the Win98SE workstations could then log on correctly to the WinXP server. Interesting huh !

Thanks

Yes. There are a number of issues with the version of Samba used in 5.1.2. It does not supply file creation and modify dates to Windows workstations correctly and it has major issues with several versions of Windows, particularly ME and XP Home, where it under-reports the contents of file structures. Some of these issues continue to occur in the version of Samba used in 5.5 as well, but do not occur in the latest versions of Samba.
