SME server 5.5 and xDSL connection
« on: August 02, 2002, 01:55:35 PM »
From time to time it seems that my ISP drops connection (xDSL) or perhaps resets the network causing my server to fail on the external interface (ethernet).

Afterwards I can still work locally on the LAN but I'm unable to use the Internet.

Until now I have reinstalled the complete server but there must be another way to fix this problem..?

Thanks,

Steen

"/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart" while logged in as root will stop and restart all network interfaces.

Re-installing the server every time something goes wrong is somewhat drastic - you may want to spend some time at the Linux Documentation Project to help you understand a bit more about Linux (http://www.linuxdoc.org/).

Thanks Des...:-)

I had an idea that a restart of the network would do the job - I will try this  the next time...

And you may be right. Checking the Linux documentation may have given me the answer..:-)

HI,

I just set up e-smith 5.5 for a company I work for, and the external network keeps on going down with no apparent reason. (can't find anything relevant in the logs)

I have tried restarting networking, ipchains, named, etc. and the network will not come back up.  When it is down I can't ping anywhere on the internet from inside, and I can't ping my server from any computers I have outside the network.  The internal network still works fine.

However, if I restart the server, the network works perfectly again.  This is happening a few times a day.

Any ideas?  We have cable internet, and the internet is always up ( we can connect another computer to the modem, and it all works )
