Will an Internal DSL Modem work?
« on: March 21, 2001, 10:37:50 PM »
I haven't seen anything about getting E-Smith to work with an internal DSL modem yet.  Qwest (formerly USWest) is sending out the Intel Pro 2100 internal DSL modem to their new customers.

Has anyone got advice on how to get one of these to work?  Are there drivers for it?  (Of course all the literature that came with it only talks about MS Windows flavors.)

A friend got one of these and an old PC and asked if I could setup E-Smith on it similar to the way I have my cable modem setup at home.  I said "sure, no problem" thinking he would get an external DSL modem.  Now I'm looking at this internal mdoem and scratching my head.

As long as you have version 4.1 or 4.1.1, it works fine, I'm using it now. However, the D-Link DFE-530TX network card distributed by Sympatico is not supported by the drivers in e-smith 4.1.1 (which are the same as used in RedHat 7.0). Perhaps this is the problem you are seeing.

Sorry, I meant to change the subject.

Back to the original topic, no, there is no support for the Qwest internal DSL modem.

Thanks Charlie.

Talked to Qwest and sent a couple of e-mails off to Intel (someone who was actually asking if there was interest in Linux drivers for the Intel DSL modems).

No luck as of yet other then spending more money on a Cisco 675/678 DSL modem/bridge/router that must be purchased direct from Qwest (on "sale" for $195) if we want any support from Qwest at all.

*Sigh*  Do you think Intel has taken ANY notice of the growing community of not-exclusively-Windows-users of their hardware yet?

Wouldn't Intel be happy to sell me an Intel DSL modem AND an Intel processor AND an Intel motherboard (modem and powerful flexible E-Smith PC) rather than buying a Cisco product?

I am hoping that 5.5 has added support for the INtel Pro/DSL 2100 Modem.
Does anyone have any information on this?
