editing /etc/group

editing /etc/group
« on: September 01, 2002, 02:55:13 AM »
I seem to have succumbed to a bug or anomaly that is wiping out my groups once the number of groups and user groups get up around 507 lines in /etc/group  Once it reaches a certain point...everything vanishes and I'm left with exactly 29 groups with many important things missing.  I'm at about 477 lines now and I still have yet to add nearly 60 machines to my domain.  I was wondering if anyone has any advice or if it's possible (practical) to edit /etc/group and get rid of some of the user groups (are they necessary?)  Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Does anyone know if each of my users and machines has to be a group or can I make one group in /etc/group such as machines and put them all in there?
