Topic: Trouble Mapping Drive

I can ping my internal e-smith box through it's 192.168.xx.xx address, but I can't locate it when I search my network or when I try to map it.

My configuration goes Cable Modem>>Linksys Router>>Switch>> Laptop, desktop, desktop, server.

I can't access or find any of my computers on my network but the most important is my e-smith box..

I've heard of this on some setups and not sure if it applies to you. Try this :-

Disconnect your Linksys router (or turn it off).

Restart your workstations and server and see if you can ping each other. If so, then try mapping drives now. If this works, reintroduce the Linksys router and try again. If you have problems with the router connected, you will need to check the documentation of the router to see about opening some ports (there's a Microsoft KB article about this but can't remember which one).

You can always map directly to the PC using the IP address in the UNC path.

IE:

\192.168.1.1 instead of using Network Neighboorhood.

I have tried directly mapping to the address, but I get this error..

the network path \192.168.1.10 cannot be found.

This system used to work until a few weeks ago when ATT reset there IP addresses.

Put that Linksys router in the closet for emergencies, slap a second NIC in the SME server and use it to its fullest capability.  I did so and am delighted with the ability to host Gallery, phpBB2 and webpages (via dyndns.org), plus you get PPTP VPN.

That is how I originally had it set up and then whatever ATT did it doesn't work like that any more.  So that is why I had to introduce the Router.  Any suggestions on this.
