Can anyone tell me if there is any how to's on setting up a newsgroup on an SME server?

Is the any add ons for the job?

Well, if you go to www.e-smith.org and click on "contributed howtos" on the right side, you'll get a rather long list.  FWIW, I'm using leafnode, and it fits my needs just fine, but it may not fit yours.

Dan I noticed the howto for leafnode is for version 4 e-smith. Could you please tell me if there are any changes to run on a 5.5 or 5.6 box?

When I installed it, I was running version 4.something.  I'm now running 5.6, and it still works just fine.
