Topic: Cutting, pasting and renaming files!

Has anyone noticed that when using Windows XP to copy files up to a share on your e-smith 5x server you can not change, cut, copy, rename or move the files once they are on the server. One I get the files copied or cut and pasted out there I get the error: Can not move or rename the file because it is in use by another program, close any programs that might be using the file and try again.

I have no problem changing these files from my windows ME computer but even if I reboot my XP machine I still get the same error! And the user I am logged in with (Because my XP machine is in the samba domain) has full control of the files and of the directory they are in. It's really weird.

Wouldn't it be even wierder if Windows XP didn't have any serious bugs, or (gratuitous?) incompatibilities with non-Microsoft file servers?

Seriously, it'd be interesting to look at a samba debug log to see what is happening.

Please add "log level = 3" to /etc/smb.conf, cut paste and rename some files, then send /var/log/samba/log.smbd along with a full explanation of what you have seen and done to bugs@e-smith.com.

I'd recommend upgrading to 5.5 with updates before going to all that trouble. Follow up here if 5.5 fixes the problem.

I am updated to 5.5 and I just updated the patches just before I got your message. I added the log level = 3 statement right under the log file =  statement. Is that fine and do I need to restart anything for samba to log?

I'm running SME 5.5 w. Update2, stock samba 2.2.4-3 and WinXP PRO.  No problems at all with files on any samba share.

My SME5.5 (bog standard - just the updates) is that it all works fine.

I had a problem where some of the ibays when selected in windows explorer (xp or 98) showed the /cgi, /files, and /html directories and the user had to select the /files directory to be able to write/read their data, while others gave the /files directory straight to explorer (which was what I wanted).  Problem solved by deleting and remaking the offending ibays.  I don't understand what was going on....

This is in the handbook.
If you set the ibay to have Internet access then you will see the /cgi /files and /html folders listed under the ibay in Windows Explorer, and your data files will be in the /files folder.

If the ibay is not set for Internet access then the files are still actually in the /files folder but this is not seen by Windows Explorer, they just appear to be iin the ibay root.

It's a good idea for all users to print out a copy of the manual and sit down and have a good slow read of it. It's quite interesting. Then I would suggest reading and experimenting with all the settings in Server Manager, and in the process you will get to know how the sme beast works.

I have seen several people have "file in use" issues with local files on XP. Some of them involved Morpheus (for some reason) trying to open the file when they went to delete it, or not having the proper codec when Windows wanted to make its little preview thingy.

Are you sure there's absolutely nothing that is accessing those files?

Yea I did a cut and paste to the share. Also I rebooted my machine to be sure nothing was accessing the files. I was able to get on my ME machine and do what I wanted with the files but not on my XP machine. I am not sure if security is part of the problem. For one I have 2 e-smith servers. One is my file and print server and PDC and is still running on a version of 4 and the other is my web, e-mail and file sharing server that is facing the internet and is running 5.5 update 2.

I log in to the my XP machine that is in my "Domain" which is run by my e-smith 4 server and I map the drives to both servers by script run from the version 4 server. I normaly don't have problems and didn't notice this problem till I went to 5.5.

(I know I need to upgrade my version 4 server, but it has run soooooo good that I don't really want to touch it. Plus it's in a closet with no monitor or keyboard and hasn't been touched since last summer. I may try to upgrade it this weekend if I get the time. LOL!)
