Compaq Dual Ethernet Card Problems

Compaq Dual Ethernet Card Problems

Everyone,
e-smith is a WICKED product and have personally forced at least 10 people to try it. Keep up the good work. I've been running e-smith from the old 2.0 days on a P60. Have recently built a PII350 so that I can do webmail on https.

Now my problem:
I am trying to get e-smith installed in an old DELL Optiplex P90 at a friends house. The problem is that it only has one PCI slot. So I thought I would be smart and buy a Compaq Netlligent Dual Ethernet card. All the documentation explicitly lists that card as supported. Thing is, it doesn't auto-detect during the install. I picked the "tlan" driver manually because that is the one it is supposed to use.. (Yes the card does have a TI chipset on it.)

So then I tried the card in a more normal P133 clone box. No autodetect, picked manually, still nada.

Then I installed Win 98 on this box, just to test the card out. Bingo. Card works fine. Shows up in the device manager as two separate cards, one at IRQ11, I/O E400-E40Fh the other at IRQ12, I/O E000-E00Fh.

My question is whether anyone out there has actually gotten any dual port NIC working. Is the problem just the autodetect? Do I have to go in and edit some conf files?

Help!!

Whether the card auto-detects or not is a matter of whether the RedHat kudzu hardware detection utility contains a mapping from PCI Id to appropriate driver. Failure for e-smith to autodetect the card is not particularly worrisome, it just means that you need to know the correct driver to choose, which you have apparently done.

Whether the driver works with the hardware or not is another thing. We don't have that card, so can't personally verify that it works correctly.

Do you get a link light on the card and hubs? Have you tried swapping the cables? Or using the "swapped" ethernet configuration?

I have verified that all of the hardware is OK. The vanilla P133 with Win98SE internet connection sharing works fine. Its just that I would rather run e-smith on this box then that other stuff ;)

Yes the link light comes on, both on the Alcatel G.Lite ADSL Modem and the card itself.

Yes I have tried switching the cables around and rebooting.

Like I said, I know that all the bits and pieces work, just not with e-smith, which is what I would prefer.

I have installed e-smith at other sites and it has always "just worked". What I am wondering is whether there is a special process for any brand of two port ethernet card.

Thanks in advance,
Ken

Oh and case you are assuming that I didn't make the right selections during the install process, I do have it set-up like I always set it up for Bell High Speed. Server and gateway, PPPoE, DHCP on internally, no proxy etc, etc. So that is not the problem.

Thanks
