Hi

I was under the impression that the e-smith server blocks all ports, so how come programs like msn,icq,kazaa etc work ? shouldnt the firewall be blocking them and the only way they should be accesible is if i open the ports in the firewall? or are all ports open by default?!

Any help or pointers into the right direction much appreciated.

Your impression was mistaken.  Any app on the lan can make outbound connections on any port, which pretty well takes care of the messenger apps.  Not so sure about Kazaa, though.

AS far as I know, kazaa can also make outbound connections.

So do any ports accept connections from inbound connections? and what should i be reading to learn more about this ipchains?

There is a how to on the how-to page that shows you how to block AOL, MSN etc. You just need to know what ports the apps use.
