Performance prob
« on: October 02, 2002, 04:44:03 PM »
I have just installed 5.5 and am having severe performance problems.  I haventried linux on this pc before but it shouldn't be as slow as it is.

My question: how do I find out where the performance bottle neck is?

It dosen't appear to be  HDD, it is only accessing it intermittently.

When I access the server manager over local network it takes several minutes (no I'm not kidding) to bring the page up.

The machine is only a p166 w/96Mb RAM but surely it should run faster than that.

Any hint's / tips would be much appreciated

this bug doesn't apply to your problem since you're already running sme 5.5
It would be very helpfull if you describe your scenario.
my first guess would probably be nics, cables and hub-switch collision indicators.

I hev been running sme in a similar box without performance problems (p166 96mb ram 8gb hdd- intel triton chipset)

I have the same Problems !!!
My SME is soooooo slow.
I want to use the SME only as Fileserver
The Web-Manager needs 20-30 sec to create a page.
The Filetransfer is superslow. Only 5-10% of maximum Wirespeed (100Mbit-LAN - checked with a Monitor-Tool on my Switch), sometimes with interrupts for 1 or 2 sec. If i made a Filetransfer with 2 other PC's I reach 50-60% Wirespeed (that's normal). I use in nearly all PC's the same LAN-Cards - also in my SME.

My System:
SME-Server:
PII-233, 100Mbit switched LAN, 2 (Raid) HD 40 GB (jupered on 32GB), 256 MB SD-RAM,
Clients:
diff. PC with w2000, ME, 98, XP

i tried pinging it from my client which worked fime up to a ping packet size of about 1.5k so I think the nic is dying.  Also the hdd has been giving errors last couple of days - bad sectors.

I'm not having much luck with hardware lately, in the last 12 months I have lost a burner, 2 hdd's, ls120, fdd and my dvd drive is on it's way out.  :-(  and most of that in the one computer, luck or a hardware fault somwhere?

Just in case change your power supply. I have a similar experience in the past and was the @#% power supply!

I agree with that!
you are having electrical troubles in your box or something is wrong with your ac outlets  (earth connector ?)
