Topic: Changing dhcpd lease times

How do I change the lease times for dhcp? I went to edit the /etc/dhcpd.conf and in it the top said edit the templates, but once I edit the templates then how does that affect the original file? Basically i want all the dhcpd lease times to be like 8 days not 24 hours, take pity on this newbie and please help!!  Once I know how to make it all work using the templates I think I'll be fine
