Samba won't come up
« on: April 03, 2001, 08:05:37 PM »
Hi everyone,

I'm an e-smith newbie, but with some RH 7.0 experience.

I installed e-smith over the weekend and everything works great, apart from Samba. The only deviation I made from a "normal" installation was to use two ISA NICs. I had to modify modules.conf to add the i/o addresses and IRQs, then e-smith seems to boot up just fine with full Internet access and all services running (including AppleTalk)... apart from Samba.

When I look at the network from a Win 98 and a Win 2K system there is no sign of "e-smith-server". Yes, I configured e-smith for the correct workgroup, which is "ONLINE" (is this case sensitive?).

Any suggestions as to what is wrong? This is the last piece of the e-smith puzzle!

Regards to all,
Mark

I don't have an idea of what's wrong, but try this on one of the networked machines:  Go to start, run, then enter \192.168.1.1 (that's two backslashes followed by the IP address of your e-smith server).  See if it opens.

Do you have Netbeui installed?

If so, uninstall it.

Thanks, yes that works and at least now I can access the server, but I'm still puzzled why it won't appear when I browse the network.

Mark.

Hi Richard,

I'll try that but isn't NetBEUI fundamental to the operation of MS networking? Can I still access Samba (or any peer-to-peer connections) without it?

Mark

No, it isn't.  Microsoft networking and filesharing will work just fine over TCP/IP, but e-smith won't work with NetBEUI.  I believe this is covered in the e-smith manual (I'm pretty sure it was with 3.x).

Another issue relating to NetBEUI.  It should be renames NetBigMouth or NetHog, because its network broadcasting can have a serious impact on even small networks.
