e-smith works fine but I can't ping the server.....
« on: October 13, 2002, 04:32:08 PM »
Hi all,
I've got 5.1.2 working with all updates. Internet sharing (56k modem)is ok with all computers. All I-bay's, logon scripts, users, passwords, and printer sharing is ok. The server works really well.
But I can not ping (I get a time out ) from any windows or linux clients trying to ping to the server. The server is the basic (192.168.1.1).The server is issuing all Ip addresses.
I've searched the messages here but could not find anything. What could be the error ..or where can I start to look?
Could it be the 10/100 5 port Hub?
I loged in as root on the server (192.168.1.1) and was able to ping all the clients but could not ping the server (itself ) 192.168.1.1.
This is what came up.
warning : no SO timestamp support, falling back to SIOCGSTAMP
ping 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) from 192.168.1.1: 56 (84) bites of data

( then it hangs ) I have to press Ctrl C to cancel the action.

It wont be the hub, you have proved connectivity with the other tests.

The only thing i can think of is that you have the Server in private mode. If that is the case it certainly wont respond to pings externaly and i am pretty sure it doesnt from the internal network.

Same thing here. Everything is working as expected, but we cannot ping to the e-smith server (version 5.1.2 configured as private server and gateway; internal ip=192.168.0.2). must be a setup-script thing.

As Duncan said, when installed as Private Server and Gateway it does not respond to pings...straight from the manual:

6.9.2. Option 2: Private server and gateway
This mode is a variation of option 1 and provides the same functionality with the following differences:

Your web server is not visible to anyone outside of the local network.

Your mail server is not accessible from outside of the local network.

Additional firewall rules have been configured to drop packets for various services (such as 'ping' requests).

All services are available on the internal network. The differences are entirely in how your server is seen by the external world.

You would select this mode only if you wish to use the server as a gateway, but do not wish to publish any services to the external Internet.

I think when it says "All services are available on the internal network." they are refering to mail, http, ldap and such.  You'd need to check the output of IPChains to see if pings are dropped on the local interface.
