Its my wan port...it seems that i cannot use it!

i thought it might be mac asddress related (ISP) but ive got that
worked out but still no dhcp ip address. i even plugged the wan port
into my dlink router with dhcp enabled and it doesnt grab and address
from it either.  the dhcp on the
internal adapter and all admin etc work fine.

if i ifconfig eth1 no line for: inet addr bcast mask

if i review configuration through the admin pages it shows the
external address at 192.168.0.109/255.255.255.0 but this isnt in the
lcd display on front of magnia. Also that isnt my dhcp range, mine is
192.168.1.X so its not getting ip from me.

any ideas??

What you're calling a "WAN port" I would assume is your externally-facing NIC, that is, the one on which you hope to connect to the Internet.  (To answer the first reply's question, though a bit of googling would've done the trick ...)

My question:  have you tried another NIC?  Perhaps the one you're using is not properly supported.  You can use an old 10base-T one (but stick with PCI unless you want to fiddle around) if you like because even the fastest Internet connection short of a T3 will fall greatly short of 10 Mbps Ethernet speed.

A few more hardware details always help in these sorts of situations, so what's in the box?

a bit more detai. Im trying to run the image on a toshiba magnia internet appliance. someone else has actually built the image and has it up and running. ive ghosted it over and everything works but the wan port (yes the externally facing NIC). if i ifconfig eth1 i see its statically set with the ip i gave it but no luck on browsing or anything. if i set it to dhcp which i ultimately need to do to get out from behind my dlink router i dont get an ipaddress from the router at all.

i know its a proprietary thing (no options to change nics but ive tried multiple units and same result) but any tests or commands to run on eth1 to try something??

Don't know anything about the appliance on which you're trying to run it ... any driver modules available from the mfr?
