USB ADSL Router
« on: October 23, 2002, 09:00:45 PM »
Hello,

I have ADSL in the UK, and connect via a USB adapter, does anyone know of a router that I can plug my USB adapter into, which will then plug onto the Local LAN via a RJ45 port?

Does such a router exist?

Or does anyone have any other ideas of how to connect my SME box to the ADSL line?

Thanks in advance,
Chales.

P.S. I have BT broadband (The home version) with the Alcatel USB modem.

There is a device which sits between the usb adsl modem and a rj45 plug, but last time I looked it was over £90.....
Dabs usually have the dlink ethernet adsl modems in at around £75-80, which will work either inline with a sme server, or standalone firewalls.

I've used these for two inline servers, and once as a standalone.

Email me if you need any other info.

Gruesome as the thought might be, it'd be possible to set up Windoze 98 or later to do the routing ... icky, but workable.  Run it headless and if the connection tanks, reboot it!

This of course only until some kind bilingual person translates the French USB/SME Howto.

Here you are...

INSTALLATION OF THE ALCATEL SPEEDTOUCH USB MODEM ON E-SMITH 4.1.2 AND SME SERVER 5

Created : 02/07/01 Revised : 19/04/02

1- Introduction

This page summarises my experience of the installation of the SpeedTouch USB on e-smith and SME.

All comments are welcome.

etc etc.

In order to preserve the various hyperlinks in the how-to it has to be put onto a web page or made available as a download in Word format or the like. If anyone has space to make it available, let me know and I'll mail it to them. In the meantime, anyone who wants it should mail me and I'll email a Word document version.

Forum readers shouldn't blame Geoff for the fact that all the apostrophes on the page have turned into full stops. That was me being too trusting of Micxrosoft Word's 'Save as Web Page' function.
