Topic: pppd refuses to run

I installed 4.0 some time ago with not problems with the same configuration. 4.1.1 is eating my lunch. I've stepped thru the install instructions 3 times (3 installs). I've tried two different modems. PPPD will not run. I'm at a loss. Everything looks right. Log files follow.

Sorry, I should have been more explicit. You should only see this on multiprocessor/SMP machines. If you have an SMP machine, boot using the "esmith-up" kernel (which is the uniprocessor version), download the update, and then reboot into SMP.

The new ppp...rpm cleared up the problem. This brings up another
question. Why do I have the smp kernel installed and made
default? The system is a Pentium Pro 150, 64meg, pcibus, ide
drives. Nothing unusual. Strange....

I'm going to change lilo and make the regular kernel default. Is
this going to present any problems?

The RedHat installer determined that you have an SMP capable motherboard. If your motherboard is not in fact SMP capable, could you send the motherboard details to bugs@e-smith.com? If it is SMP capable, good luck finding a second PPro 150

No. And neither would running the SMP kernel, other than a minor performance impact.

I can second this. I kept insisting that my system was a single processor system, forgetting that my motherboard was SMP capable, I therefore experienced all of the "problems" that had been reported on SMP machines.

Just as a side comment I would like to point out that when the e-smith "splash screen" appears showing "e-smith" highlighted and "e-smith UP" below it, this is actually a front end for LILO. If you hit the down-arrow key the system will select "e-smith UP" and launch in uni-processor mode. Never having seen any version of e-smith previously I didn't realise this until someone pointed it out to me. I thought it was just a nice "splash-ad"!!  Perhaps I just didn't spend enough time reading the screen!

Also if I started up in UP mode I could use the system with no problems whatsoever, without having to load the ppp or appletalk patches, however they are required in "SMP" mode.
