changing imap time stamp

changing imap time stamp

I have an interesting problem.

When an email is received into ./Maildir/new, it is stamped with the current time.
I let 10 minutes pass.  Then, open up my outlook express or outlook2000.  The new email shows up in the imap Inbox folder with a new and now current timestamp.
While this is happening, I am looking at ./Maildir/new and ./Maildir/cur folders.  As the new email moves from new to cur, it inherits a new timestamp.

This is very peculiar.  Theoretically, if you check your email every couple of days, you will have grossly inaccurate timestamping.

I've used other qmail servers other than sme5.5 and never ran into this problem.
Anyone have any ideas?  I'd appreciate any input.

Thanks,
Jean

This issue has nothing to do with qmail; it relates to the IMAP server, as well as to how Outlook displays dates.  Lookout shows the "received" date, which, with the IMAP server versions shipping with SME <= 5.5, will be the date it was first viewed/downloaded.  Other mail clients (like, for example, the webmail client that ships with SME) display the timestamp from the message's Date: header, which doesn't change.

SME 5.6, currently in development, has an updated IMAP server that doesn't have this behavior.

In outlook/outlook express, change the view so the sent-time is shown--not the recieved time.  I also found that users don't like to see when the email hit outlook/outlook express--they want to know when it was sent.  That was back before we fully switched to webmail and got rid of outlook/outlook express.

Thanks for shedding some light on this issue.  Guess I never really thought about Lookout config because Courier IMAP didn't work this way.  How many users do you have using Webmail?  Our SME5.5 runs on 400mhz P2 with 128mb, supporting about 150 users.  Do you think she'd be able to support all users on Webmail?  I do like the Webmail interface...

Thanks,
