UPS - Powstatd install problem
« on: November 11, 2002, 01:16:31 AM »
I am trying to follow the the How to (http://www.e-smith.org/docs/howto/contrib/UPSHOWTO.txt) to get Powstatd to run on a SME server 5.1.2.  I have a new UPS unfortunately the bundled Linux SW requires the GUI.

I notice the contributed rpms are now source.  Therefore I must compile them.

The unpack when OK but I have no idea where the files were put.  :-(  .  I would appreciate any pointers to the where to from here as I found the posts on installing Powstatd rather confusing.   It looks however very straight forward once the demon is running, to work out the configuration for a particular UPS.

Thanks

The e-smith web site was rearranged see
ftp://ftp.e-smith.org/pub/e-smith/contrib/CharlieBrady/RPMS/

Don't bother with the source rpms, just follow the HOWTO but replace the URL with the correct one.

Thanks   I am following the configuration process.  using powstatd -t  to show the status of the interface lines (DTR DTE etc) indicates no change when the ups switches to battery.

The UPS is a Centralion Micro Master 400VA UPS.  The UPS is an Line-interactive model.   The Windows monitoring software reports -:
Input and out voltage, Frequency, battery capacity and current load.

I am begining to think this is not compatable with the powstatd utility.

Any suggestions ?

A couple of possibilities exist (that I can think of).

The cable you are using may not actually be wired correctly thus no signal detected. I cannot advise what cable you should use, other than to contact the manufacturer and see if other cables exist for that model UPS.
David Pennycuick spoke of making his own cable in these forums recently, do a search on his name as Author.

The UPS you have may not signal all of the various states that powstatd can detect. Again you would need to contact the manufacturer to ascertain this.

I would start with the cable, it may be as simple as one of the pins is not connected that in fact needs to be.
