Topic: PPTP setup help

Sorry cant find the answer to this one although there have been numerous postings on this subject. Have setup a new 5.1.2 box and can PPTP to it on the internal card but not the external and yes have turned on 1 PPTP client and ext ip  to port 1723 appears to accepted in ipchains. Am I missing something obvious?

Do you have any other hardware (firewall, router, etc.) between the SME and the internet? It should be relatively Plug n Play. Just enter the IP/hostname of the SME into the client and click connect...

Thanks to those who made suggestions. I perhaps did not make myself clear - I was testing the SME  by a direct crossover cable to the external card. Tonight I connected it to a router, opened 1723 on the router and I can PPTP via internet to it . However, using this same ip address on the external card and a direct connection still wont connect. I would like to know why but am happy that it works in the real world situation.

you have to use a straight cable to connect 2 systems directly, not a crossed one.

??? So, why does some manufactorers sell networkkits with 2 nic's and a
crossover cable if it doesn't work. ???

Because ilpuco is wrong.  If you're connecting two computers directly without a hub or switch, you use a crossover cable.

Yeah, hubs and NICs "go together". You use straight through cables to connect them. If you connect two of the same, you need a crossover cable to switch one end around, so the two can talk to each other. An uplink port is basically just a reversed jack, so that you can use a straight through cable on it.

It would be interesting to know if you can ping the SME when connected directly to it. If you cannot then we are looking at a more general network connectivity problem. One problem that I have had when connecting network cards directly together is that the autosensing of media type ie 10 or 100 full or half duplex tends to get confused. I would suggest forcing the cards to be at say 100 meg half duplex and see if that resolves the problem.
