Topic: Freetype configuration

I am trying to put some text on a button using gd and freetype.

I am using e-smith 5.5.

phpinfo says, inter alia, configured '--with -freetype-dir=/usr'

I have put a path to /usr/local/LucidaSansRegular.ttf to load the ttf. No error messages are displayed but neither is any text in the appropriate box.

Are there differences between truetype and freetype fonts and if so when should I get a freetype font? Are there any other tips or tricks?

I finally got this going on a Mandrake 8.2 box.

Does this mean that freetype rendering in SME5.5 is broken?
