Install SME without Keyboard

I downloaded it yesterday. (I also downloaded clarkconnect.) I installed it on VMWare, a Virtual PC program. It installed in 20 minutes or so. It worked!!!

I installed it on an old Compaq Deskpro, Pentium 200 Mhz, 128 memory, 3 mb drive. Took about the same 20 minutes to install. I have it running now.

It is capable of serving web pages out of the box. There is a module to load Apache::MP3. I am looking to do this to stream audio to multiple units in the house. (I am unsure about sync issues with this.) The long and short of it is I like it.

Finally, if anyone knows it there is a way to install SME on a keyboardless server, I am interested. I have an old FreeGate 1000, web appliance. Appears to be a standard computer (Pentium class) running a linux (or other such OS.) This unit has a 10 pin com1 header and a 20 pin keyboard header. It also has one expansion slot. Thinking I'll install a VGA card to see if i can see whats happening. If anyone has info on how to attach a keyboard to this header or how to install SME without a keyboard, please let me know

Based on my experience you will def need a keyboard for the initial SME install, since it must be done at the SME machine itself.  Once you have it installed you can disconnect the monitor and put SME in a closet...and it will run and run and run and run....like a dream.  :)

I do all of my admin work via PuTTY and haven't been down to the basement where our SME server is sitting in about 4 months.  SME really is a solid product, but I'd recommend getting some "real" hardware to run it on - just my opinion though.  Good luck.

Hi Steve,

About a month ago, my server crashed. MotherBoard problem.

At that time I went crazzy. The all LAN was stoped, because my SME box is the center of it. The services are: webhosting, email server, file-server, ftp server, and Domain Controller.
I look arround and thought: Where can I get a motherbord? Because I dindn't had one, I decided to do something strange. I picked the 4 IDE discs from my dead server ( P II 400MHz ) and inserted them in mine personnal PC ( ATHLON XP 2.1ghZ ) and it started just fine with all the services I was runing, but in a total diferent machine. The only component equal in the two machines was the network card.
So I think that if you install SME in an ordinary computer, then you can put the disc on your future server and boot him up. The only advice that I can think of is about the network card. Try to install the SME with the network card that you are going to use in the keyboadless machine.

Hope I didn't bored you with my story, but I think that is a real good exemple of the real good work that is being made by the SME devellopers.

Have a nice fight :-) and if you test it, then let us know... ok?

   Cheers

   Gabriel

Thanks all for the help, I may try installing on another machine and swapping components.  Thanks again.
