Cannot browse Network Neightborhood through a VPN connection
« on: April 21, 2001, 02:22:49 AM »
Hello,

I have successfully configured the VPN server and a the client.
But when the connection is established, I can't ping any of the servers inide the distant network, and in the network Neightborhood I can't see any of them.

Which network protocols do I need over the VPN connection ?
Which network protocols do I need on the client ?
Which network protocols do I need on the server of the distant network ?

Thanks.

All you need is TCPIP.  Once the VPN connection is live, you should be able to ping the LAN ip addresses and receive responses.  Network Neighborhood may not work, this is typical if your connection or computers are slow.

You should be able to reach the e-smith server and LAN computers directly by entering their internal IP address and share name in the form:

\ipaddress\ibayname  (for the e-smith server)
\ipaddress\sharename   (for workstations)

A small word of warning here, the default firewalling rules do not allow packet forwarding in servers which are configured for server-only mode. Hence, currently, servers in serveronly mode cannot act as VPN endpoints which allow access to other computers on the local network - the only allow remote access to themselves.

This would only be relevant if you have a firewall with packet forwarding rules which pass PPTP VPN traffic through the firewall, directed at an e-smith server in server-only mode.
