Re-installation floppies

Re-installation floppies
« on: April 21, 2001, 09:13:29 PM »
Reading the release notes for 4.1.2 reminded me to ask this - during installation, there is the option to create a rescue boot disk; there is also the option in the e-smith manager. Does this second option do the same job? I'm not clear from the docs if this is the case.

Thanks,

These floppies have different roles.

The boot disk created at install time can be used to boot the system if the system does not boot from hard disk due to a LILO boot error. This could happen if you had made changes to the lilo configuration which didn't work, and also happens infrequently if LILO does not correctly determine the hard drive geometry at install time, as can happen with some BIOS/hard drive combinations.

The re-installation floppy is a floppy disk that will allow you to re-install your system and have it come up with your correct customised network configuration, saving you from re-entering all the data via the console configuration wizard.

I'll ask our documentation people to make sure that this is made clear in the manual.

Charlie,

Thanks for clarifying this for me.

Best wishes,
