PPTP through 5.6 server

PPTP through 5.6 server
« on: February 06, 2003, 04:57:04 AM »
Any update on making a PPTP connection through a 5.6 server?  I made the suggested change to allow PPTP connections to the SME server, but I haven't seen any suggested fixes for making a connection from a NAT'ed client to an external PPTP server.

I'm willing (and hopefully able) to help debug if this hasn't been solved yet.  I have control of all three systems in question.  (The client, SME server doing NAT, and the target of the PPTP connection...)

Thanks,
Dan

I could really make use of this right now but have had similar failures. The PPTP connections appears to come up, but then communication is blocked.

I just wanted to point out that RDP seems to work just fine under similar circumstances, i.e. an RDP client behind a 5.6 server works OK.

What is the "suggested change to allow PPTP connections *to* the SME server" that you mention? This seems to work fine without modification.

Correction. I'm running V5.5 at the receiving end so probably avoided the problem. However, I'd appreciate learning about the fix for V5.6 since I'm running that version at the client end, and want to upgrade both ends.

Search this forum for the following topic:
"5.6SME and VPN PPTP Call id issues - bug found and resolution in route"

It describes how to remove a couple of kernel modules to allow a VPN connection to a 5.6 server.  There is also discussion of the problem I'm asking about but no resolution.

Dan,
I ran into the same problem.  When using SME5.6 as gateway/server, internal network clients cannot pptp tunnel reliably to external non-sme server.  The connection starts, but then the network is sporatic.  Do you know if this affects SME5.5 or earlier versions?  On a side note,  I am willing to help debug this issue if someone could clue me into what to look for.

Thanks,

Dale

Looks like you guys are experiencing the same problem I am.  I can connect to the VPN at work from home with a modem (bypassing my SME6.0b box,) but when I try to connect to the VPN at work from home by going through my SME6.0b2 box, I get an Error 619 and am unable to get past the authentication stage.

Nobody has found a solution to let a workstation connect to a remote VPN server through an SME box running in server and gateway mode?

Here's my network topology:
