ACT! Database and Opportunistic File Locking
« on: February 06, 2003, 10:08:58 AM »
I am running an ACT! Database on a Windows Xp Pro workstation as server and considering to switch the server to SME Server 5.6 due to speed & reliability issues and to take advantage of the internal mail server SME has.

(Note for those who are not familiar with ACT! - it is a multi-user contact manager database for Windows which doesn't require any programs to run on the server, it only runs on the worsktations and the server is used to share the database files only).

I noticed that the newest version - SME 5.6 - introduces opportunistic file locking, which is one of the first things I had to turn OFF on all Windows machies (workstations and server) to safely run the ACT! database as opportunistic file locking may lead to the corruption of the ACT! database.

How does one turn opportunistic file locking permanently off on the SME Server (so it will stay off even if I have to restart the server for some reason)?

Does anybody have experience in running an ACT! Database on a Linux (SME) sever and Windows workstations?

Dear Rob,

Thank you - your help is really appreciated and it seems like this is probably an easy thing to do for a seasoned Linux person, but as you probably (correctly) suspected, I am brand new to Linux and this is chinese for me - including most of http://www.e-smith.org/custom/. Is there a "howto" which describes how to do what you say step by step so I can do it without having to learn all about Linux first? (having been exclusively a Windows user since the 80's but totally green to Linux, what attracted me to SME server actually was that I didn't have to learn how Linux works to set up a server).

Any recommendations?
