I am using a 3c509 card, which works fine, but i have to do a insmod 3c509 then restart the network after every boot. is there any way to permanently add this module, or will I have to put it into /etc/rc.local?

Are you using 5.6 and did you take a look at the bugs page yet?

The bug is related to a different family of 3com NICs.
