Services goes down mysteriously...
« on: February 17, 2003, 07:00:56 PM »
I ran 5.1.2 for the longest time and everything was wonderful.  But since I like the new Horde IMP, I finally made the switch to 5.6 (fresh install).  Everything seems to be working, then out of the blue - all services seems to have stopped.  I can ping the server - but I can't FTP, SSH or WWW into the machine.  The only way to resolv this issue was to drive to the office and do a hardware reboot.  Is this a known bug?

The only additional software installed on the new machine is awstats and none of the server logs reveal anything.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice.

That's fairly typical of a kernel panic or a runaway process that's wedged the machine.  Leaving the NIC in promiscuous mode is the default behaviour.  You need to have a look at the console before you reboot (if possible - sometimes it isn't).  Often syslogd will stop writing to /var/log/messages and write to tty1.

I'd suspect hardaware such as memory or cpu overheating first, anyway.

NickR, thank you for your response.  I kind of suspected hardware failure as well - it is running on an old PII 233 with an ancient 2G HD.  It is just odd that it should start to fail after upgrading, but you are probably right.

It hasn't gone down since the last reboot - but I will pay closer attention to it when it does go down.
